We find a penthouse overlooking a block of the Eixample in the heart of Barcelona. With the usual spatial problems of old floors: very intense compartmentalization of spaces, little natural interior light, not enhancing the strengths of the site.
Our reform action is focused on enhancing the diagonal views of the spaces and the visual leaks towards the block patio through the gallery. For this purpose, an open and broken space is configured with different heights and levels that qualify the space. This includes the living room, entrance, dining room and kitchen. The compartmentalized spaces (the two bedrooms and the bathroom) become integrated into a gray wall, pierced by the positive space of the dining room and the entrance.
The white volumes of the ceiling are cut out at different levels and house the air conditioning system: the internal machine of the heat pump and the air ducts.
Special significance is given to a piece of load-bearing wall that lies in the center of the open space. The wall is lined with a grooved strip to give it a special texture and becomes an element that can be surrounded, creating alternative circulations and giving privacy to the living room by hiding it at the entrance.
